Walgreens Gift Helps Transform UI College of Pharmacy, Contributing to its New State-of-the-Art Facility

2016-01-13

From its earliest beginnings, in a small storefront in Chicago in 1901, the Walgreen Company (Walgreens) has sought innovative ways to ensure healthier communities. Now Walgreens, one of the nation’s largest drugstore chains, has made a generous gift of $350,000 that will allow future generations of University of Iowa College of Pharmacy students to advance the role of community pharmacy.

The Walgreens gift will support an interdisciplinary, multi-use suite of 10 skills rooms—which the university will name in Walgreens’ honor—in the UI College of Pharmacy’s new building. This facility, which is scheduled for completion in late 2019, will be a state-of-the-art, universal-design facility of approximately 170,000 square feet. Among its many features will include cutting-edge research laboratories, innovative technology, and collaborative learning spaces.

“We are so grateful to Walgreens for its generous commitment to our transformational new facility,” says UI College of Pharmacy Dean Donald E. Letendre. “This suite of Walgreens Pharmacy Skills rooms will be a highly visible and integral part of Iowa pharmacy students’ learning experiences; we will use these spaces every day.”

The new Walgreens Pharmacy Skills Rooms will accommodate up to four students each, who can use the space for everything from conducting objective, structured clinical exams and patient counseling to compounding medications and working with interdisciplinary UI Health Sciences teams.

This suite will help the UI College of Pharmacy sustain its long history of innovation and excellence. The college is one of the oldest and most highly esteemed institutions of its kind in the country, and it helped create unit-dose medication safety, build an innovative pharmaceuticals-manufacturing program, and establish the Iowa Center for Pharmaceutical Care.
