Through 30 years in fundraising and more than 20 years in real estate, Alan Swanson has embraced a lifetime of giving and sharing. A recent member of the 80-year-old club, this Iowan is as active as ever with his business and volunteer pursuits.
Leveraging his education in journalism and public relations, Swanson’s career included three decades with what is now known as the University of Iowa Center for Advancement followed by his buy-in of Blank & McCune Real Estate in 2003. As co-owner/broker, he actively lists Iowa City properties and is a member of the Congress for the New Urbanism, which focuses on intentional city design to strengthen communities.
Outside of work, Swanson remains involved on campus. He is a multifaceted supporter of the University of Iowa, including the journalism, liberal arts, and nursing programs as well as the UI Libraries and Hancher Auditorium. He is currently chair of the UI Stanley Museum of Art Advisory Board and a member of its collections committee.
Swanson also advises a dizzying array of causes. He is past president of Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation, Unitarian Universalist Society, and Riverside Theatre. Previously, he held board positions with the Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism, United Way of Southeast Iowa, and others.
Swanson is an active philanthropist as well. He frequently offers his talents as a pianist to charity events, and he and his wife, Liz, have supported 18 capital and major gift campaigns in the area. Their altruism benefits more than 37 nonprofits each year, an act that significantly enriches the community.
