Each year, Mark Wedel, of Spencer, Iowa, coordinates with his grandchildren to support a nonprofit during the holidays. Last year, the family, including six grandkids—Maya Radigan, Callie Radigan, Anna Hartzell, Reece Hartzell, Erika Hartzell, and Natalie Grosse—chose UI Stead Family Children's Hospital and made a $600 gift to the Extenuating Circumstances Fund. This fund assists patients and families who have immediate financial needs—whether it be transportation or food costs, utility or rent assistance, lodging needs, or other unforeseen expenses.

Each year, thousands of donors participate in fundraising efforts through Children’s Miracle Network partners and programs. From rounding up purchases at local retailers to donating to a Dance Marathon program in your community—as well as calling into a radiothon—your support directly impacts our efforts. In the last year, Children’s Miracle Network partners and programs have raised more than $4 million to benefit education, outreach, programming, and research.

Together, Making a Big Difference.

Each summer, Cedar Rapids-based radio station 98.1 KHAK broadcasts live from Iowa City during a two-day event that highlights kids and their families who have been treated at UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Recently, the radiothon celebrated 25 years and has now raised more than $3.25 million to support Children's Miracle Network and UI Stead Family Children's Hospital.

Thanks to individuals who have supported the Child Life Gift Fund, UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital is making the sedation process safer, easier, and less intimidating for our youngest patients. Part of helping ease the stress of pediatric patients was wrapping an MRI machine in fun, colorful camping décor.

The McDonald family of Scranton, Iowa, has raised more than $50,000 for UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital to honor their son and brother, Harley McDonald, who died January 14, 2022, after a fire. To honor the knowledge and quick actions of his medical team, Harley’s family has been raising funds to name Room No. 314 where Harley—who wore No. 314 during motocross races—spent 13 days as a patient in the burn unit. Funds raised will support continuing education and scholarship opportunities for fellowship students interested in pediatric intensive care and burn treatment careers.
