Together, Building Strong Futures.

Nile Kron, who was named after Iowa football legend Nile Kinnick, has been treated at UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital since birth. Thanks to doctors and nurses at Iowa, Nile—who was born deaf—has regained hearing in both ears. This past year, 5-year-old Nile was named the Ace Hardware Foundation’s Ace Cares for Kids All-Star.

Tyler Linderbaum (21BA) is one of several University of Iowa student-athletes in the past year to use his name, image, and likeness to raise funds for UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. The former Iowa football center donated $30,000 to support Iowa’s most vulnerable patients through proceeds of merchandise sales.

More than four decades ago, 2-year-old Michael Hoak had a tumor removed from around his spine by a team of University of Iowa physicians, including Arnold Menezes, MD (74R). Inspired by the quality of care he received and the healthy life Michael has since lived, his parents, Elizabeth (70BA) and the late David Hoak (68BBA), made a $100,000 gift to support pediatric neurosurgery efforts at Iowa.

For six young kids from Van Buren County, a school bus ride was the impetus for a bake sale fundraiser for pediatric patients at UI Stead Family Children's Hospital. Maddie Cocherell, Harrison Mahon, Kennedy Mahon, Brinly McEntee, Lilly McEntee, and MaColie McEntee were inspired by The Wave during Iowa football games and wanted to do something for other kids during the holiday season. After hatching their plan on the school bus and talking to their parents, the children got to work and ended up raising $2,800 for pediatric patients.

Mary Ann (Keith) Stead (72BA) credits University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics for saving her husband’s life and allowing them to build a family together. That’s why Mary Ann gave back to support a passion for the Stead family: UI Stead Family Children's Hospital.

Together, Making a Big Difference.

The 10th and final Iowa Ladies Football Academy was held on June 11, 2022—with 600 participants raising more than $500,000. Led by Mary Ferentz, spouse of Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz, the Iowa Ladies Football Academy has given women the opportunity to enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at Hawkeye football while raising funds for UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Throughout its decade-long run, the Iowa Ladies Football Academy raised more than $3 million, which supported the new children’s hospital facility, pediatric research, and child life services.

Two Northeast Iowa families have been leaders in raising funds for UI Stead Family Children's Hospital through the Research for the Kids motorcycle ride. Over the course of 14 years, their efforts have now secured more than $2.4 million to honor Sarah Reiss, of Dubuque, who died in 2010 after a battle with brain cancer, and to support Matthew Wessels, of Zwingle, who was born with a heart condition that has required three open-heart surgeries and a recent heart transplant.

In the past year, more than 7,000 donors have supported the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital General Fund, which provides vital funds for the hospital’s most pressing needs. Gifts have helped purchase items such as a Cardio-Renal Pediatric Dialysis Emergency Machine, which provides lifesaving dialysis treatment to the tiniest patients experiencing acute kidney injury or failure. Iowa is one of only five hospitals in the U.S. certified to use this technology. Unrestricted gifts to UI Stead Family Children's Hospital support our greatest and most immediate needs. From research and equipment, patient care and family support, to education, every donation makes a difference.
